Q: "You offer wide and varied technology expertise. What work do you actually do?"

Answer: We specialise in design work and design advice and consultancy. Traditionally we have always done bespoke design work from specification. We are very efficient at this.

That isn’t to say we won’t deal with a “mature” or existing design. We are always happy to assist or consult on a technical design problem. We offer extensive experience on both new systems design, and mature systems, and can help you with your design problems.

We will assist with blank canvas designs or existing products, with redesign, improvement and technical problem solving modes.

Please refer to our business models page.

Contact us for more information and to discuss your specific requirements.

Q: "You advertise a lot of skills. You don't seem to be skilled in one area, and therefore can't be an expert. How does this benefit us?"

Answer: We believe being an expert in one field, although beneficial in some ways, is quite restrictive in others. In many ways it provides a very narrow focus to one particular area, and prevents good solutions from being found to a wider variety of problems. Specialist expertise has its place where complex problems in a single area are required. However, Templetronics possesses both these virtues: specialism and a broad base.

Our technical experience has migrated from high speed analogue and mixed signal design, plant and systems engineering, mixed signal PCB design, digital ASICs, EMC design, power electronics and control systems, complex system-on-chip and high speed multi gigabit design and therefore you have a wealth of experience to call upon.

We bring you both specialist knowledge and varied technical exposure together under one roof.

By engaging our services, you effectively get the knowledge of several different Engineer Providers instead of just one specialist.

Q: "You offer experience in many industry sectors, but don't appear to be prevalent in just one. How does this benefit us?

Answer: There is nothing fundamentally different in any industry sector. We have found that despite common misconceptions, different industries are very similar. There is no fundamental difference between electronics for telecoms systems or avionics. The same rules and technologies apply: only the considerations and standards differ. By way of the previous example: telecoms and consumer electronics would consider a product with very low per unit production costs for mass production, whereas a safety critical industry such as avionics would require a high degree of design assurance and testing, yet both systems require reliability, and are required to pass EMC testing. Due to increasing demands of product reliability, even consumer products are adopting and mapping techniques from hi-rel equipment design and manufacture.

Our project experience should demonstrate the above. We have found that in technology, there are many similarities across designing with technologies in different sectors. Semiconductor manufacturers offer devices across a broad spectrum, with support, with the only real differences being qualification screening for more extreme environments.

From an implementation perspective, designing a complex digital algorithm for a control system is similar to designing a discrete cosine video transform if you break it down to constituent parts: both use basic multiply-accumulate actions. Similarly, there is nothing fundamentally different in designing an ASIC in VHDL from programming a ladder diagram in a PLC (programmable logic controller): the same logic principles apply. In low and high power domains, the signal level and technology application drives certain considerations, as with low and high frequency.

We will design for any industry. It should be obvious that our design expertise is both adaptable and flexible and we have wide capabilities.

We have a proven ability to operate across very diverse different industry sectors, using and applying different and diverse technologies effectively, and delivering Client's projects.

By operating across industry sectors, we have the ability to offer better solutions, as our broad and diverse experience offers a fresh approach to problem solving compared to those who operate in only one sector. The chances are we may have already solved a new technical problem you face, or at least something very similar previously. We have demonstrated this in the past: our diverse technical background has provided rapid technical solutions to Clients problems. We are alos able to offer a more comprehensive and effective service than other inwardly focused service providers.

We have vast experience in low and high volume design, for different industries and technology arenas, enabling us to understand your needs and provide a better service.

Q: "What about training?"

Answer: We retain responsibility for all training. Our pledge as a professional design service, advice and consultancy service is that if we don’t know, the onus is on us to find out and learn to provide an effective design service. We have no problems with training ourselves to do the best job possible. We will happily put ourselves on courses, obtain design references and simply find out if we don’t know about something we come across. Specialist training requirements and costs, however, will be discussed with the client. Contact us for further details.

Q: "What about areas such as, for example, RF ?"

Answer: We have previously done high speed analogue design. Our training and our project exposure also encompasses some RF engineering, therefore engaging into a new technical area such as this doesn’t pose us with any problems. We will obtain training for the job if required.

With the above said, as experienced Engineers, we recognise that certain sub-disciplines in technology require years and or several projects of intensive experience. As a business, we also recognise that a Clients project has financial implications if it does not perform. With the above in mind, should our expertise be outside your requirements (for example we cannot offer years of antenna design, microwave circuit design, analogue integrated circuit design experience or other specialist technical knowledge), we will advise at the outset. Technical trained managers or Senior Engineering Professionals reading this FAQ will already understand this position, but this pledge is made for the benefit of non technical managers.

Clients are dealing with a Professional Supplier. The above stance, we feel, is a fair approach to how we tackle projects. As much as we can offer extensive and comprehensive design experience, there are limits to our expertise and experience, and should any requirement exceed our capability, we will advise in the first instance, and generally at a project enquiry for our services. Generally complex multi Engineer technical projects will have resourcing mapped out in any case and personnel requirements known.

Q: "What about tools and equipment?"

Answer: We provide our own tools and equipment such as laptops, general software, hand and test tools and equipment, if required, and if there is a requirement, then we will provide EDA tools. However, any specialist tools required will be charged for the job accordingly, and depending on circumstances.

More often than not, we find the Clients’ quality control systems mean that they have specialist design software necessary for the job, as well as licensing agreements that are pre-negotiated with EDA vendors, and workflows may already be in place, however we will provide additional tools (including software) if it assists our delivery or services (if already used by our personnel, there will be no charge or cost for this). Licensing for required EDA software is on a job by job basis. In general provision of specialist EDA software (examples, ASIC tooling etc) will be charged to the job if this is necessary for us to provide.

We provide extensive EDA tool knowledge and where a Client requires this advice we can support them with EDA input.

Remote design work will usually entail the requirement of EDA tooling. Licensing and costs for this will be discussed with Clients in advance for remote work packages requiring toolsets. If you have any further questions on this we will be happy to discuss this with you. Contact us for further details.

Please refer to our Business Models page or contact us for further details. Feel free to contact us with your requirements proposal and we will be happy to supply an estimate or quotation for engagement.

Q: "Can we engage your on a B2B (business to business) basis?

Answer: Yes, you most certainly can. We can operate on a business to business relationship with you the Client, in the same way as you would with any other supplier. This means you, the Client can engage us directly, saving additional supply costs. We can provide a professional supply of services agreement that is fair an reasonable to both parties.

Furthermore as an independent business we retain many appropriate insurances such a Public Liability, and Accident and Sickness insurances for all our employees, who of whom are versed in working to health and safety requirements and adhering to appropriate requirements on such matters on Client site. We just require an induction for our Personnel in accordance with your on-site policies for external suppliers coming to a site, so that they are able to comply with the relevant requirements.

Contact us for further information.

Q: "Do you work outside of your company's domicile, with non UK companies and can comply with the legal requirements of our country?

Answer: Yes is the answer to all three parts of that question. We have vast experience working with international companies, teams and personnel and are both able and willing to do so. We work in a fully compliant way within the requirements of different countries where necessary, and any personnel supplied to you that work on your premises will comply with all relevant legislation, and we have access to legal and fiscal experts who can assist with various legislative scenarios. There is no risk in dealing with us in this manner. Contact us for further details and/or refer to the answer to Q: "What is the situation with regards to engaging your business services?" on this page.

EU/Brexit information:
Due to the current geopolitical climate between the EU and the United Kingdom, caused by the UK referendum result in June 2016, leading to the situation known as "Brexit", we have provided a dedicated Brexit news page on this developing (and hopefully soon to be resolved) situation. Please see this page for information concerning how Brexit affects services delivery to the EU post 31st January 2020 and following the end of the Transition period schduled to end December 31st 2020, or alternatively contact us.

Although this business is primarily based on Europe, Clients in the demographics areas of the Americas and Asia are welcome to make enquiries regarding services engagements. Please contact us with your enquiry and proposal, and we will be happy to discuss the matter with you.

Q: "What is the situation with regards to engaging your business services?"

Answer: When dealing with Templetronics Ltd, you are dealing with an independent design company that specialises in providing technical consultancy and design services, to Client's technology projects.

We are a business in our own right, and we will be engaged by you under a contract for services. By dealing with us directly, on a business to business relationship (B2B), you are acting exactly like you would with say, a supplier of nuts and bolts or photocopier paper to you. There is no difference.

Any personnel supplied to you from this business will be on a consultancy/work package basis under a contract for services to a project or for technical expertise. Any personnel will be employed by
Templetronics Ltd (except in an extreme case where an individual third party managed service provider maybe utilised, to assist with various jurisdictional requirements, if this at all becomes necessary).

Any Client that engages this businesses services will be dealing with this company on a business to business (B2B) basis and not under a contract of employment/service.

Alterations in legislation have added complexity and confusion to hiring external suppliers, however we are conversant with many jurisdictions and can help you with any questions you may have on this either directly, or via our network of advisors.

For non-UK Clients
: the situation is this. We are an independent business, and any engagement in a tax jurisdiction outside of our company's domicile of the United Kingdom is wholly dependent upon the duration of the assignment and where services are delivered.

For any of our personnel who reside in your country for extended periods and meet your country's rules for tax residency, we have an obligation to report earnings to the respective tax authority. There are distinct rules that apply to this, but in other cases, if our personnel are visiting your site for very short periods, or are returning to the UK on a weekend, there is no tax liability of the individual and the situation is simply one of a cross border commuter, however this must be treated on a case by case basis in view of the correct operating circumstances. For individuals, the key fact is the duration of the time spent in a particular tax jurisdiction, which for the majority of Western Europe is 183 days in a calendar year. However, when our personnel are working in two or more countries during a fiscal year, the tax allocation rights of the income is governed by the respective double tax agreements in place between the home country and host country.

Consideration will be given to Article 15 of the OECD Tax Treaty for any Client engagement that is outside the United Kingdom, and
in consideration of the above paragraph, the OECD tax model convention is generally followed by most double tax treaties with respect to the content and the main considerations are as follows:

Employment income is covered by article 15 and in essence states the following:

1. Employment income should be taxed only in the country of tax residency.

2. Exception to the above is where the employment is exercised in another country, then that country may tax any locally-generated income.

3. Exception to the exception: the employment income shall be taxable only in the home country if:

a. the recipient is present in the host country for a period or periods not exceeding in the aggregate 183 days in any twelve month period commencing or ending in the fiscal year concerned, and

b. the remuneration is paid by, or on behalf of, an employer who is not a resident of the host country, and

c. remuneration is not borne by a permanent establishment which the employer has in the host country.

This means that long term residency of any company personnel in a host country that engages on-site personnel services will require this company to make arrangements locally to settle any tax liability our employees may have in a host country. In general, if any company employee is performing work at a non UK Clients site, for more than 183 days in aggregate (total) outside of the United Kingdom that employee is liable on earned income in the host country.

This poses no problems for us. We have fiscal contacts who can assist with settlement of tax liabilities in the above case for our personnel, ensuring compliance with tax liabilities in any host country. We have followed this successfully and without detriment to our Clients previously and will continue to do so.

In consideration of long assignments outside the UK, it may be feasible for our personnel to operate through a specialist employment management company. This will be examined on a case by case basis.

As far as a company is concerned, it is what the OECD term as a "permanent establishment", such as having offices, premises or where the control of the company is. In general a permanent establishment is deemed to apply for periods of greater than 6 months in another jurisdiction.

We have partners in the legal and fiscal professions who assist with us to ensure we are compliant with local legislation, therefore by engaging our services you can be sure that there is absolute minimal risk of non compliance to fiscal requirements.

For all Clients, both within the UK and outside, here is the basic statement: we are wholly independent agents, and operate under a contract of services engaged to provide input under that contract, generally to a project for technical services and consultancy. This is a completely different situation to an employee of your company with whom you have a contract for employment (or service).

There is a general misunderstanding between the engagement of temporary employees, (temps) (i.e. those provided to work on-site who are
employees of a recruitment or labour leasing agency or business) and the supply of Professional Service Providers and Consultants under a contract of services, of which this business is the latter. This company is not in the business of labour leasing.

If you have any questions on engagement issues, please feel free to Contact us for more information on this. We would be happy to discuss the matter with either Legal or Human Resources Personnel of a Client.

Q: "Everyone makes mistakes from time to time. What if you make one?"

Answer: Everyone makes mistakes. However, we tend to put a lot of thought into the design stage before we commit to the design. We prefer problem avoidance to problem solving.

Our pledge as professionals is that if we make a mistake, we’ll fix it at our cost not yours.
